Buckhead, May 7, 2026 — Thailand's Ambassador to the United States rolled up his sleeves and picked up a wok, joining chefs from one of Atlanta's most celebrated Thai kitchens to kick off a day of culinary recognition that brought official honors from Bangkok to the heart of Georgia.
The occasion was “Thai Select” Day, an annual program organized by the Thai Trade Center Miami that carries the full weight of Thailand's Ministry of Trade. Ambassador Dr. Suriya Chindawongse — making his second visit to a city he clearly holds in high regard — presided over a ceremony in Buckhead where more than a dozen metro Atlanta Thai restaurants were awarded the prestigious Thai Select certification, an official designation recognizing restaurants that demonstrate authentic Thai culinary standards and a genuine commitment to the art of Thai cooking.
Before the certificates were handed out, however, the Ambassador offered guests something less formal and more memorable: a live cooking demonstration conducted shoulder-to-shoulder with the culinary team from Bangkok Station Restaurant. It was a moment that drew appreciative applause and underscored the spirit of the event — that Thai Select is not merely a bureaucratic stamp, but a celebration of the craft.
“Thai Select is officially a brand to recognize the authenticity and creativity of Thai chefs in their art of cooking Thai cuisines,”* Ambassador Dr. Chindawongse told the assembled guests during his remarks.
Among the metro Atlanta restaurants honored with Thai Select award certificates were Bangkok Station, Nan Thai Fine Dining, Banana Leaf ATL, Tuk Tuk Thai Food Loft, and 26 Thai Kitchen & Bar, alongside additional recipients representing the breadth and depth of Thai cuisine across metro Atlanta.
The Thai Select designation, issued by Thailand's Ministry of Trade, has become an internationally recognized mark of culinary authenticity — a signal to diners that a restaurant meets rigorous standards rooted in genuine Thai ingredients, techniques, and traditions. For Atlanta's Thai restaurant community, whose members have spent years building businesses that honor those traditions far from home, the recognition carries both professional and personal significance.
For Ambassador Dr. Chindawongse, Wednesday's visit was a reunion of sorts. A self-described fan of the Atlanta Braves — and in particular the legendary pitching rotation that carried the franchise to its 1995 World Series championship — the Ambassador returned to Atlanta with evident affection for the city and its community.
The Thai Trade Center Miami, which facilitates trade and cultural promotion across the American Southeast, has made Atlanta a priority destination in its Thai Select outreach — a recognition that the city's Asian-American dining scene has earned national attention and deserves direct engagement from Thailand's government and trade institutions.
For the chefs and owners who received their certificates, it was a validation of years of work preserving something worth protecting – the living culinary heritage of Thailand, served fresh every day from kitchens across metro Atlanta.
