Suwanee, January 9, 2024 – Michelle Kang announced her candidacy for Georgia State House, District 99 (Suwanee, Sugar Hill and Duluth).
“I am running for office to represent all of my neighbors regardless of their income, race, religion, or the language they speak at home,” said Michelle Kang. “In office, I want to leverage my experience as a community advocate to improve the lives of our community by fighting to lower housing costs, strengthen our local economy, keep our community safe, and restore reproductive freedom.”
Kang is challenging Matt Reeves, a Republican elected to the seat in 2022; Reeves opposes Medicaid expansion and reproductive freedom. In 2023, Reeves voted in favor of a voucher scam to defund Georgia’s public schools.
Today, Kang also received an endorsement from Om Duggal, the Democratic candidate who opposed Reeves in 2022.
“I am proud to support my friend Michelle’s campaign to represent our district under the Gold Dome,” said Om Duggal, former Democratic candidate for HD-99. “This is an important race and Michelle is the woman to flip this seat this cycle.”
Before launching her campaign, Michelle served on the Gwinnett Place Mall Equitable Redevelopment Community Partner Advisory Board, the Gwinnett Transit Development Plan (TDP) Stakeholder Committee, and Chairwoman Nicole Love Hendrickson’s Citizen Budget Review Committee where she dedicated her efforts to amplifying the voices of immigrant communities in planning and development decisions, improving access to public transit, and advocating for the growth of small businesses in Gwinnett County.
Michelle has also served on the Korean American Association of Greater Atlanta (KAAGA), the Asian Pacific American Council of Georgia (APAC), and the Gwinnett Chamber.
Michelle has called Georgia home for over 30 years; she currently resides in Suwanee. Michelle holds a Master of Public Administration from the University of Georgia.
