Gwinnett Engineer Shelly Abraham Enters State House Race

Indian American Democrat takes on Republican incumbent Rep. Matt Reeves in one of Georgia's most watched legislative districts.

Suwanee, February 20, 2026 – Shelly Abraham, a mechanical engineer and longtime Gwinnett County resident, has announced his candidacy for Georgia State House District 99, representing the communities of Duluth, Suwanee, and Sugar Hill.

Abraham, who immigrated and has called Gwinnett home for over two decades, is a graduate of Kennesaw State University and works in industrial engineering for electric vehicle battery manufacturing.

He is an active voice in both the Indian American and Asian American communities across Georgia, and has served as secretary of the Gwinnett Democratic Party.

Running as a Democrat, Abraham is challenging Republican incumbent Matt Reeves in a district that both parties have fiercely contested in recent election cycles. His platform centers on affordability — lowering costs for healthcare, utilities, and insurance — along with protecting public schools, expanding homeownership access, and defending reproductive and civil rights.

“Our community deserves a representative who listens, who shows up, and who puts families first,” Abraham said in his announcement.

Abraham's candidacy reflects the broader transformation of Gwinnett County, now home to one of the most vibrant South Asian and Asian American communities in the Southeast. He joins a growing wave of Asian Americans stepping from community leadership into elected office across Georgia.

The 2026 general election will determine whether District 99 remains in Republican hands or flips in what is shaping up to be one of the state's most closely watched legislative races.
