Honoring Influence and Impact: Georgia Asian Times Celebrates AAPI Leaders at Annual Awards Gala

Duluth, July 11, 2025 — In a glittering evening that combined elegance with purpose, the Georgia Asian Times hosted its annual 25 Most Influential Asian American Pacific Islanders in Georgia Awards Gala, spotlighting trailblazing individuals whose work continues to shape the cultural, civic, and economic fabric of the state.

Held at Canton House in Duluth, the 2025 gala welcomed more than 170 distinguished guests, including Hon. Mio Maeda, Consul General of Japan; Georgia Supreme Court Justice Carla Wong McMillian; Gwinnett County Commissioner Kirkland Carden; Chamblee Mayor Brian Mock; State Senator Nabilah Islam; Dr. Philip Hong, the first AAPI Dean at the University of Georgia; and Roman Dakare, Deputy Director of Gwinnett County Economic Development.

Justice McMillian, the first Asian American elected to the Georgia judiciary, delivered the keynote address, offering a poignant reflection on her journey from a small Southern town to the state’s highest court. Born to immigrant parents from Hong Kong, she spoke of perseverance, community, and the ongoing work of inclusion. “Our presence here is proof that progress is not only possible—it is inevitable when we stand together,” she said.

The evening also marked the presentation of the 2025 Asian American Spirit Award to The Preface Project, a national nonprofit championing early childhood literacy in underserved communities. The award, one of Georgia Asian Times’ highest honors, recognizes organizations that exemplify service, leadership, and transformative community impact.

“In a time when visibility matters more than ever, we honor not only achievement but the responsibility that comes with influence,” said Li Wong, CEO and Publisher of Georgia Asian Times. “To our honorees—let your light become a beacon for others. Build bridges. Break barriers. And lead with purpose.”

Guests were treated to a traditional 10-course Cantonese banquet, capping off an evening that celebrated excellence, heritage, and hope for a more inclusive future.
