Gwinnett County Police Officer From Nepal Killed Responding to Credit Card Fraud Call

Young Nepalese officer with master's degree shot during attempted arrest at Stone Mountain hotel

Stone Mountain, February 3, 2026 — A 25-year-old Gwinnett County police officer was shot and killed Saturday morning while responding to a credit card fraud report at a Stone Mountain hotel, authorities said.

Officer Pradeep Tamang died at Northside Gwinnett Hospital after being shot by a suspect who opened fire on officers attempting to arrest him on an outstanding warrant. A second officer, Corporal David Reed, was also shot and remains hospitalized in serious but stable condition.

The shooting occurred around 7:55 a.m. at a Holiday Inn Express on East Park Place Boulevard, where officers had been dispatched to investigate fraudulent use of a credit card reported by a victim in South Carolina.

When Tamang and Reed contacted the suspect, Kevin Andrews, 35, at his hotel room, Andrews invited them inside, according to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. After officers learned

Andrews had an active warrant for failure to appear out of DeKalb County and attempted to arrest him, he pulled out a handgun and fired at both officers, striking them. One officer returned fire, wounding Andrews with non-life-threatening injuries.

Andrews, of Decatur, has been charged with malice murder, felony murder, two counts of aggravated assault upon a public safety officer, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

Authorities said he has a lengthy criminal history including multiple felony convictions involving violence, firearms and narcotics.

Tamang had recently graduated from the police academy in May 2025 and joined the department in July 2024, making him one of its newest officers.

Originally from Nepal, he immigrated to the United States a decade ago and earned a master's degree in political science from the University of Akron in Ohio.

Before joining Gwinnett County police, he worked as a private investigator and corrections officer in Pennsylvania, where his family still lives.

He was engaged to be married.

“Officer Tamang embodied the American dream,” Gwinnett County Police Chief J.D. McClure said in a statement. “He came to this country seeking opportunity, earned his education, and chose to serve his community with distinction. His loss is immeasurable.”

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is leading the investigation in coordination with the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office.
