Duluth, January 10, 2026 — The Federation of Korean Associations in the Americas, the largest umbrella body representing Korean American communities in the US, convened its 31st General Assembly, culminating in the inauguration of its new president at a ceremony outside Atlanta.
The gathering drew leaders from across the United States under the theme “One Power, Towards a Greater Future!” The daylong program included board meetings, workshops and a special general session before the formal swearing-in of Seo Jeong-il as the organization’s 31st president.
The ceremony underscored the growing political and civic visibility of Korean Americans in the Southeast. Among those in attendance were Georgia's Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, Georgia State Representative Matt Reeves, along with delegates from regional Korean associations nationwide.
Seo Jeong-il took the oath of office administered by Judge Donald Lee, formally beginning a term shaped by both continuity and change. In his inaugural address, he noted that the leadership race had been the federation’s first contested election in 15 years, a rare moment in its 48-year history.
He pledged to focus on policies and systems that would improve quality of life, safety, economic opportunity and legal protections for Korean Americans. Among his stated priorities were economic self-reliance, cultivating political leadership among younger generations, expanding the global reach of Korean culture and strengthening ties between the United States and South Korea.
Regional leaders framed the moment as a turning point. Kim Ki-hwan, president of the Southeastern Federation of Korean Associations, called it significant that the inauguration was held in the Southeast, describing President Seo’s leadership as an opportunity for renewed momentum.
Park Eun-seok, president of the Atlanta Korean Association, welcomed delegates and pledged close cooperation with the national federation, saying Atlanta’s role as host symbolized the region’s rising influence within the Korean American community.
In congratulatory remarks, South Korean Consul General Lee Jun-ho, said President Seo’s election reflected renewed confidence from the community and urged continued collaboration between the federation and local organizations.
The ceremony also carried a note of official recognition. Secretary Raffensperger presented President Seo with an “Honorary Georgia Citizen” certificate, citing his contributions to Korean American civic life and to the broader local community, prompting sustained applause.
The evening concluded with a dinner reception featuring musical performances and award presentations, offering delegates an opportunity to reconnect and rekindle.
