The Preface Project Honored with 2025 Asian American Spirit Award for Advancing Childhood Literacy

Suwanee, July 1, 2025 — The Georgia Asian Times has named The Preface Project as the recipient of its 2025 Asian American Spirit Award, honoring the nonprofit’s commitment to fighting early childhood illiteracy and expanding educational access across local communities.

Founded by Jonathan “JT” Wu, The Preface Project is a Suwanee-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit that connects high school mentors with elementary school students to promote literacy and lifelong learning. The organization’s model aims to bridge generational and educational divides—an approach that has resonated with educators, families, and civic leaders alike.

“We’re proud to recognize Preface for its impactful work in literacy and youth mentorship,” said a spokesperson for Georgia Asian Times. “The Spirit Award honors those who not only uplift their communities but also embody the core values of service, initiative, and integrity.”

Now in its 15th year, the Asian American Spirit Award has celebrated organizations across Georgia that reflect the evolving role of Asian Americans in civic life. Previous honorees include the National Association of Asian American Professionals (NAAAP), the Center for Pan Asian Community Services (CPACS), and the Korean American Friendship Society.

In a statement, Wu praised the team of volunteers who have propelled the organization forward. “I want to congratulate our incredible Preface team—our high school mentors, educators, and supporters—who’ve helped bring this mission to life,” Wu said. “This award is a testament to what’s possible when communities come together to ensure every child has a chance to succeed.”

The Spirit Award will be formally presented at an upcoming ceremony hosted by Georgia Asian Times at the GAT 25 Most Influential Asian American Pacific Islanders in Georgia-Awards Gala on July 11, 2025.
