North Atlanta neighborhoods have fast becoming foodie destinations due to emerging authentic immigrants restaurants clustering in areas such as Johns Creek, Duluth, Peachtree Corners, Suwanee, and Alpharetta.
One such restaurant that has been in business since 2018 and has been kept under wraps is Cafe Bahar Biryani & Grill, located in Johns Creek. The owners are from Hyderabad, India and serves an authentic version of their cuisines.
A friend had suggested that we dined here for lunch over their popular “South Indian Banana Leaf Thali” or “Mini Tiffin” lunch.
A thousand different flavors, a hundred different colors, tens of silver vessels, all on one green expanse of a plate.
Thalis have been a personal favorite for a long time — the thrill of being served bowls and bowls of chutney, pickle, dal, and even dessert is unparalleled. The only thing better than eating refill after refill.
I kept my expectation tempered prior to dining here as I've been disappointed several times over such claims of being the best in town.
You have a choice of vegetarian thali or non-vegetarian version. I opted for the meat-version. Simplicity and traditions go hand in hand at this thali at Cafe Bahar.
This meal consists of curry chicken, curd, paneer, dhal, bhindi (okras), gobi (cauliflower), brinjal (eggplant), chutney, sambar, tandoori chicken, fried fish and sweet accompanied by buttered nhan, and papadum, all of which share the green, smooth backdrop of the banana leaf.
As if these aren’t enough, your thali is always refilled when it's empty. I was told the thali menus changed regularly and to not expect the same items being served.
Cafe Bahar maintains a steady customers stream at lunch time on weekdays. However, the place gets packed with families and large groups gathering on weekends.
Customer service is friendly, fast and prompt at Cafe Bahar. It is also definitely a place for quality and tasty South Indian cooking.
