Atlanta, May 21, 2025 – In response to mounting concerns over rising insurance premiums, Georgia House Speaker Jon Burns has appointed Representative Soo Hong, a Republican from Lawrenceville and a Governor’s Floor Leader, to a newly established House Blue-Ribbon Study Committee on Insurance Rates.

The bipartisan panel is tasked with investigating the causes behind the sharp increase in insurance costs across the state, which has left many Georgia families and businesses grappling with financial strain.

“Georgians across the state are feeling the financial pressure from rising insurance premiums, and this committee is a critical step toward finding real, lasting solutions,” Rep. Hong said in a statement. “I’m grateful to Speaker Burns for appointing me, and I’m committed to ensuring that our insurance market operates fairly, transparently and in the best interest of Georgia families and businesses.”

The committee will examine a range of industry practices, including how rates are set, insurers’ profit margins, claims processing procedures, and compliance with state regulations. Lawmakers aim to determine whether rate hikes are justified or if consumers are being subjected to unfair or predatory pricing.

The committee’s findings, expected later this year, could lead to proposed legislative reforms intended to protect consumers and promote greater transparency within Georgia’s insurance market.

Speaker Burns said the initiative reflects a broader commitment to addressing the economic challenges faced by residents statewide. “This study committee will ensure we are holding insurers accountable while keeping the needs of Georgia’s citizens front and center,” he said in a statement.
