Community Resource Corporation (CRC) Announces The “Community, Solidarity, and Democracy” Project

Duluth, January 4, 2025 – “Community, Solidarity, and Democracy” is about launching learning laboratories for people to engage in candid and critical reflections on how they experience community and democracy across differences based on race-ethnicity, religion-spirituality, and profession, and to build solidarity across these differences. Building solidarity from the grassroots are expressions of democracy because mutual engagement cannot happen without acknowledging another minoritized community’s struggles and rights.

Central to this project is the critical question by Guinier and Torres, “With whom do you link your fate?” alongside Jennifer A. Jones’ proposition that communities of color need to acknowledge their “minority-linked fate” to realize a democratic social movement that affects broader society. This project aims to strengthen mutual understanding of linked fate by re-centering people’s narratives of fostering solidarity to promote democracy.

The project is comprised of 3 components and utilizes community-based participatory research (CBPR) approaches in all its components: a) the PhotoVoice studies with an Asia American group and a racially mixed group in Atlanta, b) discussions with nationally formed conversation partners of academics, religious leaders, and activists, and c) convening in Detroit to observe and learn inter-racial community building work.

This project is directed by Drs. Jung Ha Kim (Founder and President of CRC) and Tatsiong B. Liew (College of Holy Cross). Recruitment for study participants will start in February 2025. For further information or questions, contact Dr. Jung Ha Kim at jhk@communityresourcecorp.org.

This project is supported by a grant from the Henry Luce Foundation, which seeks to deepen knowledge and understanding in pursuit of a more democratic and just world. Established in 1936 by Henry R.
