Brookhaven, December 6, 2023 – Former city council member John Park defeated Lauren Kiefer in the Brookhaven mayoral runoff election. Park will replace outgoing Mayor John Ernst who had served an eight year term limit.

Park’s victory made history by becoming the first Asian American Pacific Islander Mayor in Georgia. He is a Brookhaven resident since 2007 and had served as a District 2 council member since 2014.

The newly elected Mayor reflected that “he never imagined as an awkward Asian American kid playing pick up basketball at Decatur High School would become the first AAPI Mayor in Georgia.”

“Our victory is proof that hard work and unwavering commitment to the people will always win in Brookhaven. Together, we will fully realize our vision of Brookhaven as a safe haven of green space and a community of character,” said Park.

“As a first generation immigrant, I am so humbled to make history by becoming the first AAPI Mayor in Georgia, and I am grateful to our entire Brookhaven community for your faith and support in achieving this significant milestone,” said Park in his remark.
