UGA football player apologize for his Asian slur

Jamaal Barret made his insensitive remarks during the NFL Draft and was captured on Instagram livestreaming.

Athens, May 11, 2023 – UGA freshman football player Jamal Jarrett apologize on Twitter for his “racially insensitive” remarks that he made during the NFL Draft on April 27.

Jamaal Jarrett is a defensive lineman who committed to play for the Bulldogs next year. He was live streaming on his Instagram when the Falcons’ No. 8 pick was announced. Jarrett was with his teammates as the time as they waited for Georgia defensive lineman Jalen Carter to be drafted. Jarrett apparently wanted Carter to be picked by the Falcons.

“I feel ashamed by my actions that have caused tremendous hurt and pain, especially to those in the AAPI community, and I truly do apologize,” Jarett wrote in his post on Twitter. “I did not mean any hate or harm towards anyone.”

“Over the past several days I have learned more about the AAPI community and the increased hate crimes that have been directed towards members of the community,” Jarrett wrote. “I have come to understand more clearly where I messed up and why this behavior was wrong. The type of language I used is harmful, and there is no place for it anywhere,” he adds on his post.
