Lawrenceville, Oct 28, 2022 – The Gwinnett Composite Squadron held a promotion ceremony for 31 new cadets at its hangar facility at Briscoe Field. The Squadron identified as SER-GA-112 operates as an official civilian auxiliary of the US Air Force and as a nonprofit organization.
CAP is made up of eight geographic regions consisting of 52 wings (the 50 states, Puerto Rico and the District of Columbia). It is a strategic partner of the Air Force, serving as a member of its Total Force. CAP has three primary missions — Emergency Services, Cadet Programs and Aerospace Education. This year, Civil Air Patrol is celebrating more than 70-years in association with the U.S. Air Force. Congress passed a law on May 26, 1948, designating CAP as the official Air Force auxiliary, according to its website.
This year’s cadet squadron who range from 12 to 21 years of age is the largest ever in the history since its inception. It is also the largest mix of diversity in membership participating in the squadron.
Highlight of the evening is the promotion of 31 cadets witnessed by Colonel Jeff Garrett, Commander of Georgia Wing, SER-GA-001, Major Adam Davidson, Commanding Officer, GAWG Group II Northeast Georgia, SER-GA-119 and cadets family members.
Colonel Jeff Garrett presented Captain Abbygale Smith and Captain Tiffany Dang with the prestigious Amelia Earhart Award. The Earhart Award marks completion of Phase III of the CAP Cadet Program, recognizing sustained excellence in all four areas of cadet life: leadership, aerospace, fitness, and character.
The squadron is scheduled to participate in the Wreath Across America program with fundraising and wreath laying ceremonies at Marietta National Cemetery in December. Wreath Across America honors the sacrifices of veterans by placement of sponsored wreaths on the headstones of veterans who have served the country.
