Atlanta, Dec 1, 2021 – Stacey Abrams, activist and Georgia Democrat, has announced her candidacy to become the nation's first Black governor. This is her second campaign for the Georgia governorship.
Abrams lost by 1.4 percentage points to Brian Kemp and the last 2018 race was dominated by allegations of voter suppression.
In a campaign announcement video released via Twitter, Abrams said she is running to make sure all Georgians have access to the same levels of opportunity, highlighting her work over the last four years.
“Leadership that knows how to do the job, leadership that doesn’t take credit without also taking responsibility, leadership that understands the true pain that folks are feeling and has real plans. That’s the job of governor, to fight for one Georgia, our Georgia,” said Abrams.
After the 2018 election defeat, Abrams launched Fair Fight, an activism group that started a statewide political operation that registered thousands of new voters in Georgia. Georgia experienced a record breaking turnout in the 2020 presidential race and January Senate runoff elections.
Abrams seems likely to be the frontrunner Democratic contender since there is no strong candidate in the Democratic primary in May 2022.
