Hong Kong, August 21, 2023 – Hong Kong superstars Andy Lau and Tony Leung Chiu Wai are reunited on screen after more than 20 years in the new crime flick The Goldfinger.
Lau and Leung last collaborated in the highly successful movie Infernal Affairs in 2002.
However, their friendship goes back some 40 years ago when both actors worked together in the TVB series The Duke Of Mount Deer in 1984.
At a recent press event to promote The Goldfinger, both actors look back at their 40-year friendship.
“When we filmed The Duke Of Mount Deer, I'd just entered showbiz, with so much work. I didn't have any free time to hang out,” Leung, 61, reminisced.
“However, our relationship was established from then on, and till today, we're still good friends,” Leung said about his friendship with Lau.
At the press event, Leung also said he was happy to work alongside his pal again.
“I've been working with (Andy) for almost 40 years. He's my partner,” Leung said.
Lau, 61, added: “Once I read the script, I asked the director, ‘Who's my co-star? Could it be Tony Leung?' The director nodded and that's how the movie came to be.”
Leung said that he, too, wanted to work with Lau for this movie: “Every collaboration is extremely enjoyable.”
Lau is also happy that both Leung and him have been able to stay tight all these years.
“I feel we're still like how we were when we first started out. We haven't changed much,” Lau said.
The Goldfinger is a true story based on the Carrian Group, a Hong Kong company that collapsed due to a corruption scandal in the 1980s. It also stars Simon Yam and Charlene Choi and is set to open at the end of the year.
