Korean American Institute Launches Largest-Ever Survey of Korean Americans

The project, titled "Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Korean America: Current State, Future Directions," addresses a critical knowledge gap. Despite over two million Korean Americans comprising the fifth-largest Asian subgroup in the U.S., meaningful research remains scarce.

Washington DC, February 11, 2026 – The Korean American Institute is conducting a groundbreaking national survey of 1,500 Korean Americans to generate comprehensive data about the community's demographics, experiences, and views.

The project, titled “Commemorating the 125th Anniversary of Korean America: Current State, Future Directions,” addresses a critical knowledge gap. Despite over two million Korean Americans comprising the fifth-largest Asian subgroup in the U.S., meaningful research remains scarce.

“Korean Americans remain underrepresented in many aspects of American life, despite their deep historical roots,” said Dr. Angie Chung of University at Albany, co-leading the survey with Dr. Edward Chang of UC Riverside.

The 15-20 minute survey examines:

  • Health and wellbeing: healthcare access and mental health
  • Economic mobility: poverty, education, and professional advancement
  • Identity and civic engagement: discrimination, racial attitudes, and political integration

Participants (18+, at least one Korean parent) will be recruited through panel vendors ensuring diverse representation across region, gender, age, education, and generation. All responses are confidential and anonymous.

The $250,000 project, funded by the Institute with $60,000 from the Korean American Foundation, includes scholars from Princeton, San Diego State, Buffalo, and Baylor universities. BSP Research will manage survey distribution.

“Despite 123 years of immigration history, most Americans know little about Korean Americans beyond K-culture references,” said Mark Keam, Institute President. “This survey will help explain the needs and aspirations of Korean Americans to decision makers.”
