Duluth, November 5, 2025 — Sarah Park secured a decisive victory in the race for Duluth City Council Post 1, capturing 54% of the vote in Tuesday's municipal election.
Park earned 1,368 votes, establishing a comfortable lead over Jamin Harkness, who received 889 votes (35%), and Shafayat Ahmed, who garnered 264 votes (10%). The race drew a total of 2,521 votes.
The results reflect the evolving character of Duluth, a city of approximately 32,000 residents located 25 miles northeast of Atlanta. Once a predominantly white railroad town, Duluth has transformed into one of Metro Atlanta's most diverse suburbs, with Asian Americans now comprising nearly 20% of residents.
Park will take office as the city grapples with growth-related challenges including traffic congestion, infrastructure needs, and development decisions. The newly elected council member will serve a four-year term on a governing body tasked with managing continued growth while balancing the interests of longtime residents and newer arrivals.
Duluth's transformation into a thriving multicultural suburb has attracted regional attention, particularly for its diverse restaurant scene and annual festival celebrating Asian culture. How the council navigates these changes while addressing resident concerns will define the city's next chapter.
