Singer-songwriter Coco Lee dies of suicide

Coco Lee’s sisters Nancy and Carol announced on social media that Coco died after slipping into a coma following a suicide attempt

Hong Kong, July 5, 2023 – Popular singer-songwriter Coco Lee has died, aged 48, after falling into a coma from a suicide attempt, her sisters Nancy and Carol posted on Facebook.

The sisters said she had been battling depression for several years.

“With great sadness, we are here (to) break the most devastating news: Coco had been suffering from depression for a few years but her condition deteriorated drastically over the last few months.

“Although Coco sought professional help and did her best to fight depression, sadly that demon inside of her took the better of her,” they said.

Coco attempted suicide at her home on July 2 and was rushed to hospital but slipped into a coma. She passed away on July 5.

Coco became famous 30 years ago when she won the fourth season of “I Am a Singer”, a Chinese reality show.

She went on to perform the theme songs of Disney’s animated film “Mulan” and Ang Lee’s film “Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon”.

“Coco was also known to have worked tirelessly to open up a new world for Chinese singers in the international music scene, and she went all out to shine for the Chinese. We are proud of her!” her sisters said.

“We hope that everyone will not only miss Coco, but also share her bright smile, treat everyone with sincerity, kindness and love, and continue her wish to let everyone around feel her love and happiness,” they added, thanking all the medical staff for their dedication in caring for their sister.
