Set in Paris in 1899, the Moulin Rouge was an entertainment club struggling to stay open due to insufficient funds. The main talent, of the shows played at Moulin Rouge, Satine, played by Courtney Reed, is told by Harold Zidler, played by Austin Durant, that the only way to save Moulin Rouge is to be the rich Duke of Monroth’s, played by Andrew Brewer, mistress. However, rather than meeting the Duke, Satine accidentally meets a poor writer named Christian, played by John Cardoza; despite Christian being the exact opposite of the Duke, Satine and Christian fall in love and agree to have an affair behind the Duke’s back so that Satine could still be with the Duke to save Moulin Rouge through his financial contributions and also be with whom she truly loves, Christian. However, Satine and Christian are constantly facing challenges in hiding their affair, and ultimately, their actions are revealed to the Duke leading to even greater challenges toward the end.
Despite the longer run time, being at around two and a half hours, the show had the audience’s full attention from beginning to end. This can be attributed to the emotionally suspenseful performances given by the talented cast, the modern, exciting, and interactive musical numbers, and the intricate and artful sets that bring the audience into the world of Moulin Rouge. This tale of “love, death, sex, and money”, lyrics from “So Exciting! (The Pitch Song)” is masterfully executed which makes Moulin Rouge! The Musical a must-see show.
