Atlanta, August 13, 2025 – Atlanta and Fukuoka, Japan, are celebrating two decades of cultural exchange and partnership with a series of special events this summer and fall, reinforcing the deep ties between the two cities.
The festivities will kick off with a commemorative ceremony at the Atlanta Botanical Garden on August 21 at 5:00 PM, where an Oribe stone lantern—a traditional symbol of peace—will be unveiled in the Japanese Garden. The event will also feature newly planted Japanese azaleas, representing the enduring friendship. Fukuoka Mayor Sochiro Takashima and a delegation from Fukuoka will attend, alongside Atlanta officials and community leaders.
Later that evening, the Japan-America Society of Georgia will host its 2025 Annual Dinner Gala, bringing together business leaders, diplomats, and cultural advocates to celebrate Georgia’s strong relationship with Japan.
Since 2005, the sister city partnership has fostered student exchanges, cultural performances, and business collaborations, enriching both communities. Highlights include school programs, economic forums, and festivals introducing Japanese traditions to Atlanta.
The celebration continues at JapanFest 2025 (September 20–21, Gas South Convention Center), where Fukuoka performers will showcase traditional music and dance. Additionally, a Georgia delegation will visit Japan in October for the Southeast U.S.–Japan (SEUS Japan) Conference, further strengthening economic and cultural bonds.
“This anniversary is a testament to the power of global friendships,” said event organizers. “The next 20 years will bring even greater collaboration between our cities.”
