GBI confirmed 4 dead, 9 injured and shooter in custody after a high school shooting in Barrow County

Apalachee High School is in Winder, about 45 miles outside of Atlanta.

Winder, September 4, 2024 – Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed 4 individuals are dead and 9 injured after a high school shooting at Appalachee High School in Barrow County.

The shooting started around 10:20 am and the suspected shooter is a 14-year old student of the high school, according to GBI.

The suspect has been identified by GBI as Colt Gray, a student at Appalachee High School. He has surrendered to school resource officers and is in custody.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said in a press statement that he is “heartbroken.”

Gov. Brian Kemp said he directed all available state resources to respond to the high school, which is about 8 miles east of Dacula, southwest of Winder.

“(I) urge all Georgians to join my family in praying for the safety of those in our classrooms, both in Barrow County and across the state,” Kemp added. “We will continue to work with local, state and federal partners as we gather information and further respond to this situation.”
