Lawrenceville, Jan 4, 2022 – A Democratic activist formally announced her candidacy to challenge Rep. Beth Moore for the newly redrawn Georgia Senate 7 seat. Nabilah Islam, a Bangladeshi American, with a pledge to expand voting rights, fight racial justice, and to expand Medicaid.
“I act with urgency because I know what it’s like to be told to wait,” Islam said in a video release. “To wait for healthcare because we can’t afford it. To wait to run for office because that’s not something that young people in office are supposed to do.”
“I have lived the struggles that so many Georgians face everyday. But often, when people my age, especially women and people of color, try to stand up to hold our politicians accountable, we are told to sit down and wait.”
“I’m done waiting,” she adds.
Islam is widely known as “Georgia's AOC” – a moniker which Islam earned after her endorsement by US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for her 2020 run for U.S. House 7th seat.
The redrawn state senate district covers parts of Duluth, Norcross, Lawrenceville, Peachtree Corners and Suwanee. This area is amongst the most diverse in Georgia with growing population of Hispanic and Asian Americans communities.
