Atlanta, Dec 1, 2021 – Atlanta City Council member Andre Dickens won a runoff election to become Atlanta's mayor. He defeated Atlanta City Council's President Felicia Moore.
Moore has been leading the race by a wide margin during the first round of voting on Nov 2. Dickens surge of support powered him after finishing second to her in November.
Dickens, who is 47 years old is a graduate of Georgia Tech and has been a City Council member since 2013.
He campaigned on broad range of topics including crime, affordable housing and improving opportunity for underprivileged residents. Other key issues including improving city services and keeping wealthy Buckhead constituents from seceding.
“Like they say, Atlanta influences everything,” Dickens said. “And it’s time that we use that influence to make some real change. Atlanta needs to show the world that we are leading, that we are leading on public safety, on criminal justice reform, that we are leading on affordable housing and eliminating the inequality that we have.”
Atlanta has seen a large increase in homicides with 10% increase over last year numbers and 57% over 2019 figures. Dickens has promised to increased police force, increase arrest and to imtroduce community policing.
