Brunswick, Sept 8, 2019 — The US Coast Guard is trying to rescue four South Korean crew members who were on board a cargo ship that began listing heavily off the coast coast of Brunswick, Ga., approximately 80 miles south of Savannah.
There were 23 crew members and a pilot aboard the Golden Ray when the 656-foot carrier became disabled in St. Simons Sound, according to the Coast Guard.
Capt. John Reed, Commander of Coast Guard Sector Charleston, told reporters at a Sunday afternoon press conference that several people were rescued from the vessel “at multiple points.” Then rescue operations were suspended due to safety concerns related to a fire on the ship.
The National Transportation Safety Board is supporting the investigation, the agency said in a tweet, with two NTSB investigators assigned to the incident. The agency will likely travel to the scene Monday, according to NTSB spokesman Keith Holloway.
The International Seafarers' Center in Brunswick provided food and clothing to between 18 and 20 crew members, the center's director, Vicki West, said.
The crew members are Filipino and South Korean, she said, and were provided with bags of hygiene items, socks, games and Bibles.
