Gwinnett Police Officer fired for kicking suspect in the head

Lawrenceville, April 13, 2017 — A Gwinnett County police officer sparked outrage in Atlanta communities after a bystander recorded him kicking a handcuffed man in the head while he was lying on the ground.

The officer was responding as a backup officer to assist a supervisor with a traffic stop at the intersection of Sugarloaf Parkway at Lawrenceville Suwannee Road.

The handcuffed man, identified as Demetrius Hollins, appears to be on the ground when the video shows the second officer, identified as Master Police Officer Robert McDonald, appear and immediately kick him in the head.

The department’s shift commander said he initiated an immediate investigation after the incident. After the incident, the police department also said they seized his issued firearm and sent him home.

McDonald, who had been on the force since August of 2013, was later terminated from the department.
