Jon M. Chu is directing the adaptation of Kevin Kwan’s New York Times best-selling satirical novel.

Warner Bros acquired the movie rights to Crazy Rich Asians in October and is fast-tracking the project with plans for an exclusively Asian cast.

The plot centres on the lives of wealthy Chinese-Singaporean families. It follows Rachel Chu, an American-born Chinese economics professor, who travels to her boyfriend Nick’s hometown of Singapore for his best friend’s wedding. She soon discovers a side to him that he had kept hidden from her before: His impossibly wealthy family and his status as one of Asia’s most eligible bachelors.

Wu is best known for her breakout role as the stern but loving matriarch Jessica Huang on ABC’s Fresh Off the Boat.
