Com Mai is a hole-in-one restaurant located at a shopping strip on Pleasant Hill Road. Located adjacent to Guitar Center — an easy landmark to help find the restaurant. It has reincarnated from the former Red Garlic Thai Restaurant.
Com Mai has a steady stream of Vietnamese customers, mainstream customers have yet to discover this restaurant. Its menu serves a wide variety of selections from bunh-mi, rice plates to pho.
I decided to try Bun Mam — a classic bowl of rice noodles served in a fishy stock of vegetables, squid, shrimp and fish.
I was pleasantly surprised by its rich broth. In fact, the taste surpassed the famous Bun Mam served at former Quan Ba 9 Restaurant on Buford Highway.
Ingredients used are fresh — especially the meat, fish, shrimp and vegetables. The serving portions here are generous compared to other restaurants.
The service are friendly and attentive.
Another recommended dish is Bun Bo Hue — spicy vermicelli noodle soup. The dish serves here had a balance of spicy, sour, salty and sweet flavors that is predominantly lemon grass.
Thin slices of marinated beef shank and knuckles made up most of the dish protein. It also comes with a variety of vegetables including cabbage, mint, basil, bean sprouts, coriander and green onions.
The decor at Com Mai is basic and no-frills. The restaurant is clean and well-maintained despite the place has gone through several ownership changes in the past five years.
Com Mai provides a great value for its dishes. It is not overly expensive and yet affordable for the consuming public.
Check out this restaurant before it becomes a hipster place — when the service and food goes downhill.
