Maum Bakery New Korean-French Bakery Opens in Duluth
By Mark Ho Posted October1, 2008
Food fact: Some of the best French bakeries in metro Atlanta are run by Asians.
Maum Bakery has established a reputation for its delectable Asian-French desserts. It opened its first store on Buford Highway in March 2007 and recently opened a branch store at Steve Reynolds Boulevard in Duluth.
It’s one of a small wave of Asian-French bakeries that express a fascinating new aspect of Atlanta’s food zeitgeist. With their refined but tradition-busting creations, these bakeries – independents as well as recently arrived outposts of upscale Korean chains – target a sophisticated, well-traveled clientele within the Korean community.
And non-Korean Georgians are quickly picking up on the appeal of cakes, pastries, cookies and breads made with European baking techniques adapted to Asian tastes.
At Maum Bakery, ingredients familiar to lovers of fusion desserts – green tea, red bean paste, chestnut and sweet potato – bring an air of innovation to beautifully executed European classics. Not incidentally, some new Asian classics-in-the-making are front and center.
Maum Bakery for the most part romanticize super-refined forms of European baking, including viennoiserie, the French baking style that focuses on puff pastry creations.
The place is open from 7 a.m. to midnight, and the flow of customers served by the courteous counter women never stops. It’s a good place to get superlative examples of Korean-bakery favorites: green tea chiffon cake and breakfast pastries with fillings such as green pea paste. But their specialty might be the bite-size cakes and cookies: mini mouslin and brioche, along with green tea coconut bread and inaka.
The specialty at Maum Bakery Duluth is cake. Its green tea tiramisu is a delicious sponge cake layered with mascarpone cheese morphed with green tea cake layers. Simply delicious and tastefully created. Maum’s choco dome cake is filled with vanilla cream that melts in your mouth.
As at other Korean bakeries, many pastries are individually cello-wrapped and the overall setting is pitched to be hygienic and modern. Breads are baked fresh every day at the store.
Maum Bakery Duluth has a charming and cozy atmosphere with soft music in the background. With free wifi offering and nice surroundings, you will quickly ease into the bakery with a cup of coffee or hot tea.
